Genesis 32:22-32. If there is one of God’s attributes presented in Genesis, it is power. God demonstrates power when He creates the world, in His judgment of sin, and in the authority of His covenant. But in this text, it is said God condescends to Jacob, in human form, and engages in a physical battle, a wrestling match that may last hours. And the text says that Jacob prevails.
What is that all about? How can Jacob best the Lord in a contest of strength? Well, he really doesn’t. The Lord pops Jacob’s hip out of socket with the touch of a finger. But God does use this event to show Jacob that it when we trust in Him, wholly and completely, when we lean on Him and stop being self-willed and self-sufficient, we are able to prevail through the strength of Jesus.
Are you wrestling with challenging situations that seem beyond your control? Do you know that you may really be wrestling with God? Do you want to see how God stands ready, not to wrestle with you, but to embrace you? It is time to stop trusting in yourself and start trusting in Jesus.
