The Lord of the Sabbath

Remember The Sabath And Keep It Holy - M Leone Bracker (1924)

In our text today, Luke 6:1-11, we find two more conflicts with the Pharisees, this time over what is lawful to do on the Sabbath. And, like in Jesus’ day, the issues of the Sabbath are still conflicting, they oftentimes end in confrontation. Many can be very Pharisaical in their view of the Lord’s Day, adding extra-biblical constraints and regulations . Others can be antinomian, considering the 4th Commandment, the instruction to honor the Lord’s Day, to be a bygone institution irrelevant in our day. However, we are challenged to consider that Jesus said of Himself that He is the Lord of the Sabbath. And if He is really our Lord, how does He expect to live on this day?

We find the answers in our text. Jesus shows that works of necessity, works of mercy, and works of ministry are indeed allowable on this day. And we also see that it is more than what is lawful, our focus should be to remember that this day is a gift from Him, a day to worship and adore Him, through our thoughts, words, and deeds. So, learn what it means to follow Jesus and lift Him up on this, the Queen of Days, for He is indeed Lord of the Sabbath.
